618-11 : root

서울특별시 강남구 역삼동 618-11에서 자라난 나무다.
A tree that once took root at 618-11, Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

올 여름 그 나무를 베어왔다. 탕개톱을 만들어 판재를 켜보고, 모루 위에서 철물을 정으로 쪼아 은을 입혔다. 옻칠로 철물과 나무의 표면을 마감하여 다리가 네 개 달린 반을 만들었다.

This summer, I cut it down. I built a frame saw to resaw the planks, chiseled the metal fittings on an anvil, and inlaid them with silver. The metal and wood surfaces were finished with ottchil (traditional lacquer), coming together as a four-legged ban—a low table steeped in vernacular form.

생각하고 표현하는 손을 따라 감각하는 손을 따라갔다. 작업을 하며 여러 장인 선생님들을 만나뵈었고, 지금도 꾸준히 교류를 하고 있다. 신선이 선생님께서 은입사를, 손문규 선생님께서 옻칠을 알려주셨다. 두 분 모두 서울시 지정 무형문화재 선생님들이다. 작업을 하며 박다울님의 음악을 늘상 들었고, 그 외에도 많은 예술 노동자들의 마음을 경험하려 노력했다.


I followed the tactile hand, led by the one that thinks and shapes. While working, I met with many master artisans and continue to stay in touch with them. Master Shin Sun-yi, a Seoul-designated intangible cultural asset holder, taught me silver inlay; Master Son Moon-gyu, also recognized by the city, introduced me to the art of ottchil. Throughout the process, I listened to the music of Park Daul and tried to remain attuned to the hearts of fellow makers.

At first, I used a frame saw to make the planks. Later, I resawed the wood myself using a chainsaw and wooden jigs.
As I learned silver inlay, I began to craft and decorate the metal fittings—jangseok—by hand.

처음에는 이 뿌리의 좌표를 그리고 싶었지만, 후에는 그 마음이 남았다. 나에게 감각되는 전통의 유산을 다시 찾아보려는 작업의 일환이다.


At first, I wanted to draw the coordinates of this root. But after completing the work, what remained was the feeling. This is part of my ongoing effort to reencounter inherited forms through the felt experience of making—a quiet return to something deeper than explanation.
